with Oona Alexander, Parenting Coach

The all-in-one answer for toddler mums who want to bring calm into the house.

Are you exhausted because your child bites, hits, kicks and refuses to cooperate?
Or feeling powerless because your toddler runs off, screams or won't sleep?

  • Is it like this? Your child demands your attention 100% of the time so you end up with no personal space at all;
  • You adore your child - but sometimes your really don't like their behaviour;
  • You're saying things to your child you promised yourself you'd never say - but you don't know how to stop yourself;
  • It's exhausting confronting the same behaviour issues everyday and not making any progress.
I know just how it feels.

When my son was born, my whole world was turned on its head! His behaviours really flummoxed me. Although I was an Oxford graduate and an experienced teacher, sometimes I just didn't know what to do! The behaviour that really challenged me was his biting. Being bitten was really painful and I really didn’t know whether to ignore it, be stern, enforce consequences - or what. Although I was committed to being a “gentle parent”, I somehow doubted that “gentle” would work with such “ungentle” behaviour.

I tried being stern. My son’s anxious response to this “new, stern me” sent me running to my first parenting workshop. And that’s when I decided I was going to find out the best way of communicating with young children.

I became a Early Years Professional. Parents came with questions and I looked for answers; they were not easy to find.
Then I discovered the Pikler approach
and a lightbulb went on.

Oona Alexander - 6- Weeks to Sanity

During my training in the UK, Hungary, The Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, I found the information I had been looking for. I brought the answers back to the groups that I was running. Over years I continued to support parents and research the best ways to respond to children.

These past twelve years have taught me that it's definitely not your fault when you've no idea what to do – when, out of sheer exhaustion, you resort to methods you promised yourself you'd never use, like shouting or punishments.

Just as our children need understanding, so do you as a mother. 0n my course you'll get the understanding you need.

"One specific result is that he now sleeps all night in his own bed."

"Do it! I would really recommend it! I got a huge amount out of the course. As well as gaining lots of good ideas, I now think about things in a different way. One specific result is that he now sleeps all night in his own bed. The calls were brilliant - I found those really helpful. And the whole approach is fascinating - I think it could be life-changing for a child.”
Lucy Goldstone, mother of F, 2.5 years and J, 6 months.

"It’s the best decision I made."

“I’d say definitely do it. It’s the best decision I made. It did so much more for us and my relationships with the boys than I ever thought it could. I’m really pleased with what we’ve accomplished.”
Becca Adamson, mother of T, 2 and J, 6 months.

"The moments that I found stressful aren’t stressful any more."

“This course has completely changed the way I parent. The moments that I found stressful aren’t stressful any more. I feel like I have a toolkit to handle them with - a strategy that works. This is a way that works - and I agree with it as well. I have read many books, tried many techniques. None of it has worked with my 3 year old. Now I really enjoy his company. It’s really brought us closer together.”
Jennifer Moore, Bristol, mother of H, 3 years and W, 18 months.

The information I bring is easy to assimilate and apply. You don't need to spend a lot of time reading long parenting books.  I'll give you concrete examples – helpful phrases and gestures you can choose. And because my approach is about understanding children, you'll be learning more than recipes - you'll get a handle on helpful attitudes that'll make your life as a mum a lot easier.

Above all, you'll feel more confident about yourself as a mum. You'll not only have my support as an expert.  You'll have a community of respectful, like-minded mums around you.

"It’s the most respectful way of parenting I’ve come across."

“I would definitely recommend the course - I’ve talked to a lot of people about how valuable I’ve found it. It has transformed the way I parent using clear, simple tools that that feel right, easy and natural - and they work really well! It’s the most respectful way of parenting I’ve come across. Also authentic. And it allows children to be who they are - without imposing. The points of conflict don’t get set up, because you get good responses from the child. So you get to be the parent you want to be!”
Sarah Khanna, Beaconsfield, mother of Z, 18 months.

"She is happier after these 6 weeks and for that alone I am so grateful."

“Oh my, Oona... I wish I wish I had met you when my daughter was 3!!! She is happier after these 6 weeks and for that alone I am so grateful. I thought the care moments with my 2 year old son were good, but what we have now after the course, is a different thing altogether. I wouldn't swap it for the world! I think your course is worth its weight in gold.”
Emma Banks, Woolwich, mother of L, 7 and A, 2 years old.

FAQ

I am familiar with RIE. Is the Pikler approach connected with RIE?

  • The Pikler approach is the source of RIE. Magda Gerber learnt about the care of young children from Emmi Pikler. Then she went to the USA and set up RIE. So the two are very much aligned - but not identical.

I have a three year old. Will I get value out of the course?

  • The course is particularly aimed at those with one year olds and two year olds, as well as those with babies. But the core principles of respectful parenting that you'll learn are valid for 3 and 4 year olds and, in fact, they work all the way through childhood: I use them with my 12 year old son. If you are still interested, please contact me with your questions and we can chat.

I am not sure if the course fits with my ethos. Do you offer a refund?

  • If you feel the course is not right for you after all, you may apply for a refund in the during the first two modules. Your money will be returned in full. After we move on to Module 3, you are committed. No more refunds will be given.

How much time will I need to set aside for the course?

  • Just a little time each week. The pdfs can be absorbed in small chunks, whenever you have a moment. The Q&A call will be once a week at an easy time for UK parents.

Do I need access to a computer to do the course?

  • If you do not want to use a computer or tablet, the pdfs can be printed off and put in a folder. You need a device to listen to the videos and audios. This could be a phone, a tablet or a computer.

I have a young baby. Is the course for me?

  • Yes it is! The course includes information about windows of opportunity in the first year of life so it will be very helpful to you. Some issues we discuss will lie the future, so you will be well prepared.

Can my partner/spouse take part?

  • You're welcome to share the course materials with your partner. However only one of you may actually participate by asking questions on the calls and joining the Facebook group.

I have done your workshops. Is this course substantially different?

  • Some parts will be familiar, but this this course will help you to take things much further. In addition you'll get support from me to put it into practice over a 6-7 week period and the benefit of a community of like-minded mothers.
